chain as a parallel upward or downward movement from the lowest level to the highest level of an association. Where the upper level manager will bring his lower level manager into a disciplinary system. Or the lower level worker will automatically come under his superior.

A scalar chain is a method or means of communication system in which an organization's top management to lower level employees are involved and where supervisors implement their orders, advice, action plans through a well-controlled operational model. These supervisors are themselves bound by a chain.

Henri Fayol on this principle highlight that the hierarchy steps should be from the top to the lowest. This is necessary so that every employee knows their immediate senior also they should be able to contact any, if needed.
