Gosairhat Upazila, in search of history and tradition

Naming: No specific information is available on the naming of Gosairhat Upazila. Gosairhat Upazila is riverine area. This area was once char or grazing land. In ancient times, there were many cows and buffaloes reared in this area.

Here there was a Kayastha village with the name Ghosh of the Hindu community. The main occupation of these Ghosh was to graze cows in pastures or fields. On the other hand, the Muslim community here built slaughterhouses due to the cheap and easy availability of cattle. The area was named Gosai due to the presence of a butcher shop, later the word Gosai became Gosairhat due to the presence of haat on certain days. It should be noted here that earlier the word Gosai meant slaughter house.

However, many believe that during the period of Nawab Alivardi Khan and the last independent Nawab Siraj Uddaula of Bangla Bihar Irishad, a saint named Brahmananda Giri lived near Moolgaon village in present Gosairhat police station. People used to call him 'Gosai'. The name Gosairhat may be derived from Gosai itself, but that is speculative. No concrete evidence is available. Because after the year 1757 or a few years before that, when an influential person (saadhu sannyasi) died, the area was named after that person. There are many examples of this in Bangladesh. But, after the death of a saint named Brakshananda Giri, the name of Moolgaon village was supposed to be changed to Gosai. But it didn't happen. Moreover, if the village or place is known by the name of the said person, then it was supposed to be called Brahmananda or Giri. When Gosairhat was converted into an upazila in 1983, it is suspected that the upazila was named Gosairhat after that person.

Again, according to many, the ancient Idilpur pargana was inhabited by a group of the Kayasthas of the Hindu community namely the Gosh community. Ghosh changed form to Ghosai (cow, cow's milk) or Gosai. The people of this Ghosh community used to sit and sell milk at certain places. Later, the concept of Hat actually became Ghosairhat or Gosairhat along with Ghosh. It should be noted here that the Bengali meaning of Ghosh, cowherd, herdsman, going to Goppalli, Kayastha and Sadagop class of Bengali Hindus are specials, herdsman etc. The greatest example of the Prana Purusha of the Ghosh community is Yogesh Chandra Ghosh, the founder of Sadhana Medicine. Eminent educationist Kali Prasannaghosh was born in this area.

On the other hand, the word Gonsai is a diminutive form of the word Goswami. Go means earth. Swami means Lord. It means that Ghosh or Gosai had a special influence in this area.
